Our Mission

The Canadian Association of Black Journalists (CABJ) recognizes the need to support journalists working outside of Canadian newsrooms. We have seen an increasing number of Black content creators and entrepreneurs who are working as digital storytellers outside of traditional media. The CABJ Media Startup Bootcamp will help to grow the ranks of Black content creators by equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need to build and launch their own platforms. The program is led by experienced instructors who have successfully launched their own media startups. Graduates will compete for CABJ Startup Grant of $5,000 each, awarded annually.

TD Bank is the exclusive financial sponsor of the CABJ Media Startup Bootcamp.

About the CABJ

Founded in 1996, the Canadian Association of Black Journalists’ (CABJ) mission is to increase representation through education and inspiration. We believe Black journalists must work together in an effort to diversify newsrooms, to increase the number of Black media professionals in management positions in Canada and to educate and inspire a new generation of young Black journalists.

As the CABJ works towards extending its reach across Canada, we are focused on:

• Advocating for diversity in Canadian media

• Re-establishing and increasing CABJ’s membership base in regions across Canada

• Raising up a new generation of Black journalists and content creators

• Offering hands-on workshops and other diverse professional development opportunities to Black journalists and content creators

Our CABJ membership offers members access to our three-week Media Startup Bootcamp (CMSB), a program that helps Black creators to bolster or start their own digital media publications, and CABJ Connects, our national network of Black media professionals where they can access employment opportunities.
